Regional meeting on Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) from Latin America and the Caribbean (in Spanish)
The Kunming-Montreal World Framework on Biodiversity, adopted in December 2022 at the fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 15) of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, includes 23 goals aimed at halting and reversing the loss of nature for the benefit of people and the planet by 2030. Goal 3 stipulates that at least 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas, as well as coastal and marine areas, be effectively conserved and managed through protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs), recognizing indigenous and traditional territories.
Therefore, with the aim of strengthening the OECM agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), a regional meeting was held from June 7 to 9, 2023, in Lima, Peru, organized by the World Commission on Protected Areas of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (WCPA-IUCN), in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Re:wild, and the University for International Cooperation / Latin American School of Protected Areas of Costa Rica (UIC-ELAP). The meeting facilitated reflection and the exchange of experiences regarding the progress and challenges of countries in the identification, recognition, reporting, and management of OECMs, allowing the identification of the need to continue promoting capacity development, monitoring the effectiveness of OECMs, and developing institutional, regulatory, and financial frameworks to ensure their sustainability.
