Frigate Bay Recreational Area
Designated as a National Park at the national level in 2014, the Frigate Bay Recreational Area spans 0.14 km2. This area includes the Frigate Bay Salt Pond, a 7-hectare saline water expanse with fringing mangroves situated along the coast at Frigate Bay. Recognized as an Important Bird Area, this ecosystem is home to various bird species, including three nesting species.
The site holds significant ecological value as it is located adjacent to the popular "Strip," and is frequented by tourists and locals with its array of restaurants and bars. Despite its importance, there is currently no active management or monitoring of species and habitats. Proposed recreational and eco-tourism development in the National Physical Development Plan (2005) prompted the Department of Environment to take responsibility for management as a protected area. Development oversight falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Physical Planning and the Ministry of Tourism.
