Pitons Management Area
The Pitons Management Area, designated as a World Heritage Site at the international level in 2004, spans 19.41 km2 and is situated on the southwest coast of Saint Lucia near Soufriere. This area boasts outstanding natural beauty, characterized by the majestic volcanic spires of Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rising to 777m and 743m, respectively. The landscape features mountainous topography with lushly forested terrain, encompassing sub-tropical wet and tropical moist forests, along with tropical dry forest areas near the coast. The marine coastal belt exhibits a steep submarine shelf, supporting well-developed fringing reefs.
The Pitons Management Area is not only visually stunning but also hosts highly productive biological ecosystems. The region, located within the Qualibou depression or Soufriere Volcanic Centre, is home to Sulphur Springs, showcasing geothermal activity with fumaroles and hot springs. This World Heritage Site stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of spectacular geological features and rich biodiversity, making it a globally recognized treasure for conservation and appreciation of natural wonders.
