GEF SGP Country Programme Strategy for OP6 - 2015- 2018 Country: Grenada (2017)
The Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) provides non-governmental and community-based organizations (NGOs/CBOs) in developing countries with grants to enable them to tackle worldwide environmental challenges, while addressing local sustainable development needs. The SGP is a GEF corporate initiative, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services. The GEF SGP is now in its 6th Operational Phase (OP6), which covers the period 2015 to 2018. At the global level, the SGP OP6 programme goal is to effectively support the creation of global environmental benefits and the safeguarding of the global environment through community and local solutions that complement and add value to national and global level action. A key element of OP6 will be the development of landscape/seascape approaches within countries to better focus grant-making, and promote strategic programming and clustering of small grant projects with the aim of achieving greater impact, synergies and opportunities for scaling up. This document presents the Country Programme Strategy (CPS) for implementation of the GEF SGP for the State of Grenada. Developed through a participatory approach, including five (5) parish based and one (1) national consultation, the CPS outlines the priority areas for OP6 within the context of GEF’s strategic vision, national development priorities and stakeholders’ views.
Implementation of the CPS is intended to make considerable contributions towards attainment of important national development targets, particularly in the areas of the sustainable land management (SLM), biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and mitigation, coastal and marine management, vulnerability reduction, sustainable livelihoods and poverty reduction. Added to this, within the context of Grenada’s Nationally Determine Contribution pursuant to Decision 1/COP 21 of the UNFCCC, the GEF SGP can significantly contribute to Grenada’s target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% of 2010 levels by 2025 through replication and up scaling of its climate change adaptation and renewable energy projects, and sustainable agro-ecology practices. In like manner, the SGP is anticipated to prevent land degradation and contribute to restoration of 10% of degraded land by 2020, and mitigate the effects of drought and other climate shocks through implementation of its SLM interventions.
